Treatment of experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis with intravitreal injection of infliximab encapsulated in liposomes

Abstract: Intravitreal injection of liposomal infliximab can prolong the persistence of the drug in vitreous body and demonstrated a satisfactory safety and significant therapeutic potentials in EAU. The use of biodegradable particles for therapeutic antibody delivery may provide a promising approach for the treatment of ocular diseases.

“…Liposomal drug delivery systems have also been used in other autoimmune diseases. Liposomes were used for infliximab delivery to the eyes in the rat model of experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis [44] and methylprednisolone hemisuccinate in an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model of human multiple sclerosis [45]. Furthermore, liposomes displaying a peptide [46], an antibody (e.g., anti-伪8 integrin or anti-CD4 antibody) [23, 47], or glutathione [48] have been employed for drug delivery in other autoimmune diseases including EAE, lupus, and other glomerular diseases.…”

“…The application of targeted drug delivery is advancing rapidly in the field of autoimmune diseases. Besides its use for arthritis therapy summarized above, liposomal drug delivery has also been used for therapy in animal models of experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis [50], experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis [51][52][53]; and SLE (or lupus) [24,54]. Besides the use of peptides and folate described above, antibodies (e.g., anti-伪8 integrin or anti-CD4 antibody) [24,54] and glutathione [55] have also been employed as ligands for drug delivery in above studies.…”

“…Los liposomas son ideales porque encapsulan f谩rmacos tanto hidrof铆licos como hidrof贸bicos y demuestran una muy buena compatibilidad con los tejidos oculares 50,51 . Ejemplo del uso de este tipo de nanopart铆culas son las nanosuspensiones de prednisolona e infliximab intrav铆treo con nanotransportador liposomal 52,53 .…”
