Treatment of High Strength Distillery Wastewater (Cherry Stillage) by Integrated Aerobic Biological Oxidation and Ozonation

Abstract: The performance of integrated aerobic digestion and ozonation for the treatment of high strength distillery wastewater (i.e., cherry stillage) is reported. Experiments were conducted in laboratory batch systems operating in draw and fill mode. For the biological step, activated sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment facility was used as inoculum, showing a high degree of activity to distillery wastewater. Thus, BOD and COD overall conversions of 95% and 82% were achieved, respectively. However, polypheno… Show more

“…The widely accepted model for aerobic processes, Monod's model (Monod, 1949) however, could not be employed to describe the relationships between the substrate utilization and the biological growth. The aerobic treatment of the distillery wastewaters of different origins showed that all these experimental findings could be very well correlated with the Contois model (Beltran et al, 2001, Beltran et al, 1999. According to the Contois model, the relationship between the specific substrate based growth rate of microorganisms (m) and the substrate concentration in a batch process, limited by the amount of the available substrate and can be expressed as:…”

“…Além disso, ácidos orgânicos podem ser degradados eficientemente pelo processo de lodo ativado 17 . Beltran et al 62 estudaram o processo combinado, lodo ativadoozonização, no tratamento do efluente proveniente de uma destilaria. O processo de lodo ativado foi capaz de reduzir até 95% da DQO e 82% da DBO.…”
