Treatment of inflammatory internal root resorption with mineral trioxide aggregate: a case report

Abstract: Because of its insidious pathology, internal root resorption can extend to significant dimensions before being recognized. MTA plus the fitting of a fibre-glass post provided adequate, functional rehabilitation of a compromised tooth for 20 months. Despite the favourable biological and mechanical properties of white MTA, considerable tooth discolouration may occur.

“…One of the important properties of MTA is its superior ability to resist leakage (15), which may be explained by its superior marginal adaptation (16). High alkalinity, due to the predominant presence of calcium hydroxide in the formulation of MTA after mixing with water, results in biologic properties similar to those of calcium hydroxide (17). Thus, it is hypothesized that MTA may be used to prevent or arrest tooth resorption.…”

“…Tooth discoloration has been reported with the use of gray MTA in direct pulp capping 74) and therefore the use of white MTA has generally been recommended in the esthetic zone. However, tooth discoloration associated with white MTA was also described in case reports in endodontic treatments 75,76) . Tooth color change was reported to be induced by both gray and white MTA in vitro 77) .…”

“…Taken together, the antimicrobial activity of MTA may not be as strong as those of traditional calcium hydroxide-based cements and sealers 70) . In spite of its many positive properties, some disadvantages of MTA include long setting times, poor handling [71][72][73] , and coronal tooth discoloration [74][75][76][77] . Reported setting times have shown variations: 50 min 73) , less than 4 h 78) and 70 and 175 min for the initial and final setting times 79) , respectively.…”
