Treatment of Microcotyle sebastis (Monogenea:Polyopisthocotylea) infestation with praziquantel in an experimental cage simulating commercial rockfish Sebastes schlegeli culture conditions

Abstract: The antiparasitic efficacy of praziquantel against the blood-sucking polyopisthocotylean Microcotyle sebastis was tested in an experimental cage simulating commercial rockfish-culture conditions. Juvenile rockfish Sebastes schlegeli were separated into 4 pilot net-pens, and the fish in the groups were either fed a control diet (Group C), fed a praziquantel-adsorbed diet (Group F), bathed in 100 ppm praziquantel for 4 min (Group B), or bathed in 100 ppm praziquantel for 4 min and then fed a praziquantel-adsorbe… Show more

“…Given the recorded pathogenicity of other microcotylids on captive held fish stocks ( e.g. Bivagina tai [24,26]; Microcotyle sebastis [27]; Sciaenacotyle panceri (Sonsino, 1891) [28]; Sparicotyle chrysophrii (van Beneden et Hesse, 1863) Mamaev, 1984 [29]; and Zeuxapta seriolae (Meserve, 1938) [29-31]), a full assessment of the potential impact Omanicotyle heterospina n. gen. et n. comb. may have is advised before production is initiated.…”

“…In Korea Microcotyle sebastis is considered a major parasitic disease agent as it has been related to high cumulative mortalities of net-pen farmed rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) (Kim & Cho, 2000). In northwest Mexico, several microcotylid species have been reported from snappers from Jalisco, Nayarit, Sinaloa and Baja California Sur (Table 1).…”

“…Several studies indicate that the anthelmintic compounds praziquantel can be employed as alternative for the control of monogenean ectoparasites of marine fish (Fajer-Ávila et al, 2006;Hirazawa et al, 2000;Kim & Cho, 2000;Sharp et al, 2004;Stephens et al, 2003). Praziquantel causes spastic paralysis to the parasite and induces a calcium influx across the worm tegument, while also inhibits glucose uptake, forcing the parasite to consume its glycogen stores (DEF, 2005).…”

“…M. sebastis infection occurs in S. schlegelii net cages throughout the year, and high cumulative mortalities of juveniles are often observed during summer season (Kim & Choi, 1998). Because of its economic importance, there have been many studies on this monogenean, mostly focussing on the infection dynamics and chemotherapies (Kim et al, 2001;Kim & Cho, 2000;Kim & Choi, 1998).…”
