Dairy products are one of the richest sources of vital nutrients in the diet of human beings and it occupies an important place in satisfying their nutrient requirements. The dairy products possess a very short lifespan and during their decomposition create a huge nuisance to the environment. The dairy effluents discharged from the industries are mainly composed of complicated substances such as organic compounds, inorganic compounds, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, chlorides, sulphides, fats, oils, grease, etc. These organic loading present in the dairy effluent have a negative impact on the environment during its discharge to nearby water sources. The physical and chemical treatment of the dairy effluents is not as effective as the biological treatment. The biological treatment method is found to be the superior method for treating the dairy effluent. The biological wastewater treatment can be performed in two various conditions such as aerobic and anaerobic. The treatment methods such as aerobic lagoons, activated sludge, sequential batch reactor, trickling filter, completely stirred tank reactors, fluidized bed reactors, and anaerobic filters are some of the biological methods used in dairy effluent treatment. This review article has investigated in detail regarding the environmental impact of dairy effluents and their effective treatment using biological treatment technologies

Sewage treatment and disposal is a major concern in many developing countries like India due to improper wastewater collection and treatment facilities. Safe, economic and effective disposal of domestic wastewater is one of the most challenging problems in today's civilization. Conventionally, septic tank is used for on-site treatment of domestic wastewater; but it causes groundwater pollution and incomplete action on contaminants. Recently other technologies have been developed such as Bio-filtration, Membrane bioreactors, Bio-towers, Sequential Batch Reactor, Fluidized Aerobic Bioreactor, Packed bed reactor, Submerged fixed film technology, Concentric chamber reactor and various combinations of aerobic and anaerobic processes which have given better performance than that of septic tank. This paper reviews the application of such technologies as alternatives for on-site treatment of domestic wastewater in various perspectives. The different types of reactors developed by researchers are also reviewed in order. This paper is concentrated on the review of treatment options for domestic wastewater generated at municipal level.

Experiments were undertaken to develop a sustainable, process intensified membrane integrated crystallization technique for the extraction of lactose from cheese whey. The study explored concentrative mode of membrane crystallization and its possible integration with conventional evaporative crystallization. Effects of the membrane module, mass transfer coefficient, nucleation rate, pressure drop and their interdependence were studied through modelling and system design. This was followed by exhaustive experimental investigations and parameter optimization. The effect of antisolvent addition on membrane crystallization was also explored. Following this, the membrane integrated technique was employed for selective lactose recovery from real cheese whey sourced from sweetmeat manufacturers. Competitive lactose crystal yields of 3.8- 4.96 g per 100 ml of cheese whey (from which fat & protein content was isolated) were obtained. The presence of membrane lowered the total crystallization times as compared to evaporative crystallization. Addition of antisolvent reduced crystallization times in the range of 13.5% - 23.1% for membrane integrated & chemical precipitation techniques. In the alcohol series of antisolvent dosing , a progression from methanol to butanol demonstrated enhanced reduction in crystallization. Crossflow NanoFiltration (NF) showed a higher concentration than crossflow UltraFiltration (UF). The membrane integrated crystallization technique successfully demonstrated waste valorization with competitive lactose yields from cheese whey.
