Treatment of petroleum wastewater by conventional and new technologies A review

Abstract: The objective of this study is to summarize studies and investigations and show a brief details of different technologies used for the treatment of petroleum wastewater. The wastewater from Petroleum industries and refineries mainly contains oil, organic matter and other compounds. The treatment of this wastewater can be carried out by physical, chemical and biological treatment processes. Treatment of petroleum wastewater has two stages, firstly, pre-treatment stage to reduce grease, oil and suspended materia… Show more

“…Monoethylene glycol (MEG; formula HO-CH 2 -CH 2 -OH) is an essential chemical product used to manufacture polyester fiber, bottles, and film [2]. It is also required to reduce the risk of gas hydrate formation during hydrocarbon transportation [3]. Petrochemical industrial wastewater laden with MEG is characterized by poor biodegradability, high toxicity, and carcinogenicity [4].…”

“…The long hydraulic residence time leads to large reactor volumes and initial investment costs [8]. Moreover, the chemical treatment of petroleum wastewater requires advanced reactions and processes, and it utilizes large amounts of reagent and raw material [3]. Furthermore, the membrane technology suffers from high energy consumption, fouling and scaling problems, and complex production and control procedures [11].…”

“…The release of untreated oily wastewater can affect the quality of groundwater, seawater, and drinking water, and causes air pollution with the evaporation of volatile oil components to the atmosphere [4,5]. Even when released at very low concentrations, oil contaminants can have a significant impact on the environment [3,[6][7][8].…”

“…Refineries liquid effluents are complexes matrices of organic and inorganic pollutants, the quantitative and qualitative contamination depends on the unit configuration and the crude oil nature. The major pollutants found in the effluent are oil and greases, which are the source for other hazardous compounds such as phenols, BTEX, naphthenic acids (NA) and poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) (Fakhru'l-Razi et al 2009;Aljuboury et al 2017;Ali et al 2018;Al-Khalid & El-Naas 2018;Singh & Shikha 2019).…”
