“…The main histological features of photoaging include dermal damage with marked elastotic degenerative change, loss of collagen, reduction in number and size of fibroblasts, an increase in proteoglycans and a moderate mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltrate. Irregular epidermal thickening progressing in the later stages leads to dysplasia and cytological atypia [2]. Development of novel strategies to reduce the occurrence of skin cancer and delay the process of photoaging are highly desirable goals.…”

“…Although fast and convenient direct methods that are appropriate for the clinical setting have been developed based on interference fringe profilometry and the use of CCD cameras [26,27,28], the preparation of replicas remains the most frequently used technique with a vast body of data available [3,4,5,8,10,12,13,17,18,29,30,31]. The advantages of the replica technique are simple and rapid sample preparation, reproducibility and precision, and the possibility to store the replica for repeated measurements [24,25].…”

“…Roughness was reported to vary significantly between different sites, being largest in the posterior neck and smallest in the upper back and lower leg, while only minor differences between genders and races were shown [8,9]. Surface topography was further used to assess the results of intervention on skin, for example, by moisturizing agents [10], antiaging products [6], laser surgery [11], chemical irritants [12], and vitamin analogs [13]. …”

“…In addition, it has been shown that these phytoconstituents have a synergistic photoprotective effect and can be used as sunscreen to protect cellular damage of the skin from radiation light exposure Campos et al, 2006). Recently, the radioprotective effect of phytochemicals has been gaining popularity in skin care and attention has been focused in developing topical formulations, which can be used as complementary as well as alternate medicine to heal and rejuvenate skin from various disorders (Svobova et al, 2003;Griffiths et al, 2005;Kapoor et al, 2009;Saraf and Kaur, 2010). Some of the medicinal plants with radioprotective properties -antioxidant, antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory -are listed in Table 1.…”
