Photochemoprevention has become an important armamentarium in the fight against ultraviolet radiation induced damage to the skin. UV irradiation to skin results in erythema, edema, sunburn cells, hyperplasia, immunosuppression, photoaging and photocarcinogenesis. Various synthetic agents have been used as photoprotectives but they have limited use because of their potential toxicity in humans and their ability to interfere only in selected pathways of multistage process of carcinogenesis. Several botanical compounds have been shown to be antimutagenic, anticarcinogenic and nontoxic and have ability to exert striking inhibitory effects on a plethora of cellular events at various stages of carcinogenesis. Since multiple pathways are involved in photocarcinogenesis so mixture of several botanical antioxidants working through various mechanisms, in conjunction with the use of sunscreens could also be an effective approach for reducing photoaging and skin cancer in humans. The performance of sunscreen substances could be improved by modification of their chemical, physical and technological properties or by the use of novel carriers like liposomes, nanoparticles, phytosomes, transferosomes, nanospheres etc. The application of novel approaches can also improve its efficacy regarding continuous action of herbs on the human body. This review will focus on list of herbs, formulations and evaluation parameters of photoprotective herbs.

Background/Aims: To determine the roughness of the surface of human skin at highly sun-exposed anatomical sites in a wide age range in order to derive consequences for sunscreen application. Methods: The forehead, cheek, nose, shoulder, and dorsal hand of 4 age groups (0-9, 20-39, 40-59, and >60 years) were investigated by replica formation, and areal topography was determined by confocal chromatic imaging. The arithmetic mean height as a roughness parameter and the void volume of the surface profile were calculated. Results: Age and site had a significant effect on roughness. Both the dorsal hand and nose exhibited the greatest roughness over the age of 40, and the forehead of the youngest age group exhibited the smallest roughness. Differentiation between sites progressed with age, whereas roughness increased significantly with age for the dorsal hand and nose but not for the other sites. The void volume was smaller than the volume corresponding to the typically recommended amount of sunscreen application except for the cases of largest roughness. Conclusions: Different site-age combinations show significant variation of skin surface roughness. The application of sunscreen may in some instances need to be adjusted to take into account the increased roughness of highly sun-exposed anatomical sites.

Plants play important roles in human life not only as suppliers of oxygen but also as a fundamental resource to sustain the human race on this earthly plane. Plants also play a major role in our nutrition by converting energy from the sun during photosynthesis. In addition, plants have been used extensively in traditional medicine since time immemorial. Information in the biomedical literature has indicated that many natural herbs have been investigated for their efficacy against lethal irradiation. Pharmacological studies by various groups of investigators have shown that natural herbs possess significant radioprotective activity. In view of the immense medicinal importance of natural product based radioprotective agents, this review aims at compiling all currently available information on radioprotective agents from medicinal plants and herbs, especially the evaluation methods and mechanisms of action. In this review we particularly emphasize on ethnomedicinal uses, botany, phytochemistry, mechanisms of action and toxicology. We also describe modern techniques for evaluating herbal samples as radioprotective agents. The usage of herbal remedies for combating lethal irradiation is a green antiirradiation approach for the betterment of human beings without high cost, side effects and toxicity.
