“…Initial injuries were mainly sports injuries or road traffic accidents. The average age 33 (range 27-43) was a little higher than in previous series (Agarwal et al, 2007;Badia et al, 2005;de Soras et al, 1997;Deshmukh et al, 2004;Duteille et al, 2003;Ellis et al, 2007;Hynes and Giddins, 2001;Johnson et al, 2004;Majumder et al, 2003;Syed et al, 2003) for the 15 retrieved patients (mean 40 years) and for all 30 patients (mean 42 years). In our opinion, the age was not a confounding factor in the overall results.…”

“…Ellis et al reported 4 patients with fractures of 50% of the articular surface that regained 88°of PIP motion with external fixation. 3 This superior result is limited by the fact that, although none of these 4 patients studied had flexion contracture, 5 of the 6 patients lost to follow-up had flexion contractures averaging 21°. The authors were unable to identify any series of VPA in which the results of patients with fractures of over 50% of the joint surface could be specifically extracted.…”

“…Twentyfive percent of their patients developed pin-track infections but there were no major complications. Concentric reduction has been noted to be critical to outcomes while small articular step-offs are of little impact 10. Dynamic traction consisting of Kwires alone or K-wires with spring-loaded fixators have been reported with similar results.…”
