Treatment of sleep disturbances in trauma-affected refugees: Study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

Abstract: BackgroundSleep disturbances are often referred to as a hallmark and as core symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Untreated sleep disturbances can contribute to the maintenance and exacerbation of PTSD symptoms, which may diminish treatment response and constitute a risk factor for poor treatment outcome. Controlled trials on treatment of sleep disturbances in refugees suffering from PTSD are scarce. The present study aims to examine sleep-enhancing treatment in refugees with PTSD. We aim to asse… Show more

“…In addition, in a logistic regression analysis, stimulant treatment was not a statistically significant predictor of poor sleep at the end of double-blind treatment. After 6 months of open-label treatment, mean global PSQI had improved by 2.4 points compared with the end of double-blind treatment; the minimal clinically important difference for PSQI was previously estimated at 2.5 points [ 55 ]. This suggests that the improvement in sleep observed between the beginning and the end of open-label treatment was clinically meaningful.…”

“…Challenges to overcome are the lack of availability of translated standardized instruments and the optimal employment of translators. Because of language and cultural barriers, trials comparing pharmacological and psychological treatment are of particular interest (Sandahl, Jennum, Baandrup, Poschmann, & Carlsson, 2017).…”

“…Imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) is one of the most commonly used interventions for posttraumatic nightmares (Krakow 2010), and an RCT to investigate whether the addition of of mianserin and/or IRT to treatment as usual for PTSD improves sleep disturbances is currently being conducted (NCT02761161; Sandahl 2017).…”
