BackgroundStriae gravidarum (SG) are atrophic linear scars that represent one of the most common connective tissue changes during pregnancy. SG can cause emotional and psychological distress for many women. Research on risk factors, prevention, and management of SG has been often inconclusive.MethodsWe conducted a literature search using textbooks, PubMed, and Medline databases to assess research performed on the risk factors, prevention, and management of SG. The search included the following key words: striae gravidarum, pregnancy stretch marks, and pregnancy stretch. We also reviewed citations within articles to identify relevant sources.ResultsYounger age, maternal and family history of SG, increased pre-pregnancy and pre-delivery weight, and increased birth weight were the most significant risk factors identified for SG. Although few studies have confirmed effective prevention methods, Centella asiatica extract, hyaluronic acid, and daily massages showed some promise. Treatment for general striae has greatly improved over the last few years. Topical tretinoin ≥ 0.05% has demonstrated up to 47% improvement of SG and non-ablative fractional lasers have consistently demonstrated 50 to 75% improvement in treated lesions of striae distensae.ConclusionOverall, SG has seen a resurgence in research over the last few years with promising data being released. Results of recent studies provide dermatologists with new options for the many women who are affected by these disfiguring marks of pregnancy.

Skin microneedling accelerates the process of skin regeneration through the creation of numerous microinjuries which emerge when skin is deeply punctured with very thin needles. The whole procedure evokes various reactions which can be divided into three major phases: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. It activates platelet growth factors which are responsible for the stimulation of fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin. Moreover, skin breakdown enhances penetration of active ingredients. Treatment can be performed with the use of different devices, all equipped with needles of various lengths. Due to the fact that skin microneedling stimulates the synthesis of significant rebuilding and structural skin elements (collagen, elastin, proteoglycan), it is used in the treatment of many skin defects of different etiologies (e.g., photoaging, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, hypo‐ or hypertrophic scars, pigmentation changes, infraorbital dark circles, teleangiectasia, stretch marks, cellulite, alopecia, and vitiligo). In order to accelerate postsurgical regeneration and/or to enhance effects, microneedling is combined with the application of UV light (photodynamic therapy with ALA), LED light, platelet‐rich plasma, chemical peels, stem cells, retinoids and other pharmaceuticals, and vitamins. High effectiveness, limited number of side effects, and short recovery time, make skin microneedling a popular cosmetic, and medical treatment.

S tretch marks are manifestations of epidermal atrophy and result from tissue damage due to excessive tension [1, 2]. Stretch marks are one of the most common skin lesions for both women and men. The most frequent places of their locations are the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, chest, sleep, armpits and groin. Striae are divided according to the type and etiology on atrophic, stretch marks be-belt, linear stretch marks, red stretch marks, white striae, striae black and dark blue [3, 4]. Blue and black stretch marks are less common than other clinical types of stretch marks, especially among patients with dark skin phototypes due to the increasing saturation of melanin and in the foci [5, 6]. Due to its location in a particular anatomical region for stretch marks is characterized by the following pattern. Pragnacy stretch marks are predominantly localised in the abdominal area and on the breast; the adolescent stretch marks are localised on the thighs and in the lumbosacral region; nonpregnant young women get stretch marks mainly in the chest area and hips [5, 7, 8]. Most often striae are perpendicular to the lines of Langer, in directions with a minimum capacity of the skin to stretching [1, 2]. Striae represent linear atrophic scars, able despite the small area and, most often, the localization at closed clothing parts of the body, cause significant psychological difficulties and lower quality of life due to aesthetic concerns, and because of such subjective symptoms as itching [5, 9, 10, 11].
