Treatment of surface water using cold plasma for domestic water supply

Abstract: This paper presents the results of using cold plasma to treat surface water for domestic use purpose. Experimental results showed that cold plasma was an effective method for destroying bacteria in water. After treatment with cold plasma, concentration of coliform and Escherichia coli dramatically reduced. Besides, cold plasma significantly removed water odor, increased dissolved oxygen and decreased the concentration of chemical oxygen demand. However, cold plasma significantly raised the concentration of nit… Show more

“…The excessive intake of nitrate with drinking water causes thyroid, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, methemoglobinemia [45] [49]. Since, plasma discharge produces reactive nitrogen species like NO − 2 and NO − 3 , which results in the increase of concentration of nitrate and nitrite in water with the increase in treatment time (Figure 3 results from previous investigators [12] [14]. Very low sodium on diet is recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); the higher concentration of sodium intake could cause severe health impacts on living beings [50].…”

“…One of the contemporary researches in the field of quality of water is the treatment of water by cold plasma [12] [13] [14] [15]. Among the various methods adapted, dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma has high efficiency in removing contamination [16].…”

“…In most of the previously discussed discharge schemes, the parameters of aqueous solution such as pH conductivity, oxidation reduction potential (ORP) were mentioned as influencing the dye decolourization processes [Nguyen et al 2019]. In this work, the important item of studying the effects of water parameters on the decolourization efficiencies of solution dyes, which was not emphasized in detail previously, was investigated using DBD plasma discharge produced above the dye solutions for two aqueous solutions containing methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) as organic dye materials.…”

“…Most studies show that the pH for plasma-activated water increases. Similarly, the electrical conductivity increases, which may be associated with the formation of hydrogen and nitrate ions [32]. The density and viscosity of water are almost constant.…”
