Treatment of unilateral giant fibroadenoma by breast reduction skin incision: The inverted "T" technique

Abstract: In GFA with a significant breast asymmetry, excision through inverted "T" technique was successful in achieving postoperative symmetry with the opposite breast in these patients. Complications were minimal.

“…While some authors recommended simple enucleation of the mass using appropriately sited peri-areolar or inframammary cosmetic incision relying on the remaining displaced breast tissue to fill in the space left by the excised giant fibroadenoma so negating the need for reconstruction, others advised the use of mastopexy or reduction mammoplasty technique using the inverted T-incision technique [4,9,[11][12][13][14][15][16]. Achebe et al considered significant breast asymmetry, i.e., the difference in the position of the nipple areola complex of 6 cm, as an indication for reduction mammoplasty [17]. In some cases of larger fibroadenoma, an adapted version of the Goldilock's technique had been used successfully [18].…”

“…In recent years, percutaneous rotary cutting and in situ ablation technology have been applied in breast fibroma resection. These techniques significantly ameliorated the cosmetic problem; however, as the tumor leaves residue, these two methods are not appropriate in cases of large tumors . Thus, a surgical resection procedure that can thoroughly resect the tumor, along with a small amount of normal tissue, is needed.…”

To achieve aesthetic requirements, scars should be hidden as much as possible.…”

“…Breast fibroids, also referred to as fibroadenomas, are benign breast lesions caused by the proliferation of fibrous tissue and glandular epithelial tissue, and are mainly found in young women. 1,2 The occurrence of breast fibroadenomas is affected by the patient’s family history, fertility, breastfeeding status, and endocrine function. 3,4 The incidence of breast fibroids has recently been increasing, with associated disruptions to patients’ lives.…”
