Abstract:The study investigated the performance of the pre-denitrification membrane bioreactor (MBR) process to treat high-strength wastewater generated from food waste disposals. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) as membrane foulant and microbial community profiles were analyzed under different hydraulic retention time (HRT) operation conditions. The pre-denitrification MBR was effective for treating food wastewater with high chemical oxygen demand (COD)/N resulting in high total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency. The operational data showed that effluent qualities in terms of COD, TN, and TP improved with longer HRT. However, membrane fouling potential as shown by specific membrane fouling rate and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) increased as HRT increased. The longer HRT conditions or lower influent loading led to higher levels of bound EPS while HRT did not show large effects on the level of soluble microbial products (SMP). The restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis showed similar microbial banding patterns from the sludges generated under different HRT conditions, indicating that HRT had minimal effects on the composition of microbial communities in the system. All these results suggest that the MBR with pre-denitrification is a feasible option for treating high-strength food wastewater and that different HRT conditions could affect the operational performance and the fouling rate, which is governed via changes in microbial responses through EPS in the system.

In this paper, three identical membrane bioreactors (MBRs) were operated in parallel in order to specify the influence mechanism of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on MBR. The results showed that the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) was stable though it decreased slightly as HRT decreased, but biomass activity and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in sludge suspension decreased as HRT decreased. The filamentous bacteria grew easily with decreasing HRT. The extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) concentration and sludge viscosity increased significantly as filamentous bacteria excessively grew. The over growth of filamentous bacteria, the increase of EPS and the decrease of shear stress led to the formation of large and irregular flocs. Furthermore, the mixed liquid suspended solids (MLSS) concentration and sludge viscosity increased significantly as HRT decreased. The results also indicated that sludge viscosity was the predominant factor that affecting hydrodynamic conditions of MBR systems.

Environmental performance of different water recycling technologies is compared on the basis of the associated potential environmental impacts using the technique of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The LCA method is used here to support decision making in water recycling in terms of (1) comparison and selection of suitable technology and (2) identification of opportunities to enhance the environmental performance of the water recycling train. In addition to the conventional impact categories used in LCA, a new soil salinisation potential is included. The environmental impact contribution from the construction phase of each technology is estimated using the Missing Inventory Estimation Tool (MIET) approach which relies on the input-output analysis technique. LCA results are reported and discussed in detail in this paper and areas of potential improvement are identified including: (1) sludge quality and quantity, and (2) energy consumption. The suitability of using the LCA technique in the context of water recycling is discussed and the limitations of LCA for this particular purpose are outlined and further research needs identified.
