Treatment of Xanthelasma Palpebrarum by the Pinhole Method Using a 10,600-nm Carbon Dioxide Laser

Abstract: Xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) presents clinically as yellowish plaques on the upper and/or lower eyelids. To date, several studies have reported on the therapeutic efficacies of ablative and non-ablative lasers for treatment of XP, including 10,600-nm carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers, erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) lasers, 1,550-nm erbiumdoped fractional lasers, pulsed dye lasers, Q-switched neodymium: YAG lasers, and 1,450-nm diode lasers. Here, we report on a case of XP effectively treated using the pi… Show more

“…Ahn et al reported a case treated using the pinhole method in 2013. 12 The patient was successfully treated without scarring or distortion. In our study, we prospectively enrolled 13 patients and followed them for a relatively long period.…”

“…In transoral approach, after tonsillectomy, muscles and mucosa membranes are dissected to find the apex of the styloid process, which is then removed using a cutting tool (CO2 laser). [13][14][15][16][17][18] Transoral approach has a cosmetic advantage which leaves no visible scar after surgery, but also it has a disadvantage that the styloid process does not completely expose during the operation. 19 Recently, a new method was introduced in which the styloid process is removed after an incision is made into the anterior tonsil pillar and the tonsil is only pushed to the medial side without performing tonsillectomy.…”

“…Xanthelasmas start in the reticular dermis or subdermis and progress to the subcutaneous layer and orbicularis oculi muscle. Various treatment options are available including excision, 4,5 trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peeling, 6,7 cryotherapy, argon laser, 8 CO2 laser, 9,10 and Nd:YAG laser therapy. 11,12 Small lesions can be effectively treated by surgical excision.…”
