Treatment outcomes of drug resistant tuberculosis patients in Morocco: multi-centric prospective study

Abstract: Background Drug resistant tuberculosis is a major public health problem in Morocco and worldwide. Treatment outcome of drug resistant tuberculosis is poor and requires a long period of treatment with many toxic and expensive antituberculosis drugs. The aim of this study is to evaluate treatment outcomes of drug resistant tuberculosis and to determine predictors of poor treatment outcomes in a large region of Morocco. Methods It is a multi-centric observational cohort st… Show more

“…This is similar to other study findings [ 23 , 25 , 35 ]. Cigarette smoking directly causes ciliary dysfunction; this diminishes the immunity of individuals, which makes them prone to primary MDR-TB [ 56 , 57 ].…”

“…Tuberculosis (TB) strains that are resistant to the first-line TB treatment regimens are more difficult to treat than drug-susceptible ones [ 32 ], entails extended chemotherapy (up to 2 years of treatment), with medicines that are expensive and toxic, and higher rates of treatment failure and death [ 13 , 33 ]. Rapid diagnosis and accurate detection of all forms of drug-resistant tuberculosis is a key factor for effective patient care and for reducing and containing the spread of these resistant strains [ 34 ].…”

“…In Morocco, tuberculosis is endemic and a major public health problem and 36 000 cases of TB were notified in 2018, with nearly 150 new cases per 100 000 inhabitants [ 12 ]. The incidence rate of MDR/RIF R -TB was estimated to be 530 in the year 2018 compared to 160 patients in 2015 [ 13 ]. Despite the use of the directly observed treatment short-course strategy for controlling the disease since 1991, the incidence is still increasing, with an alarming increase in the number of MDR-TB with each passing year [ 14 ].…”

“…However, the incidence of TB has again been increasing with the emergence of drug-resistant M. tuberculosis strains, and this increased incidence is closely related to economic development and the nutritional environment. 2 China has a large population and unbalanced regional economic development. Statistics show that China ranks third in the incidence of TB worldwide.…”
