Treatment Research in Speech, Language and Swallowing: Lessons from Child Language Disorders

Abstract: Three major types of treatment research methodologies are described. Studies on child language intervention are reviewed as examples of trends and methodological issues characterizing treatment research in speech, language, and swallowing within the last 2–3 decades. Principles are drawn from that literature and suggestions for future directions are discussed with particular attention to recent efforts to support clinical trials and treatment outcomes research.

“…During the auditory perception of speech, the central hearing has to process complex acoustic structures in real-time. Adequate processing of acoustic information is the requirement for speech and language development [ 1 ]. Particularly, disorders in the temporal processing are supposed to be responsible for deficient auditory discrimination abilities, which can result in an impaired speech perception [ 2 ].…”

“…Although there has been a wide range of narrative reviews considering the effectiveness of speech and language interventions (Snyder‐McLean & McLean, 1987; Guralnick, 1988; Goldstein & Hockenburger, 1991; McLean & Woods Cripe, 1997; Gallagher, 1998; Leonard, 1998; Olswang, 1998) there have, to date, been only two systematic reviews of the literature (Nye, Foster, & Seaman, 1987; Law et al, 1998). In early 2003 a third systematic review and meta‐analysis was completed for the Cochrane Collaboration and the Campbell Collaboration (Law, Garrett, & Nye, 2003).…”

“…During auditory perception of speech, the central auditory processing system has to process complex acoustic stimuli in real time. For speech and language development, good processing of complex acoustic stimuli is important [6]. Temporal processing ability, in particular, has a major role in speech perception.…”
