Treatment Responses to Tooth Whitening in Twins

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine heritability estimates of treatment responses to a 10% hydrogen peroxide strip-based whitening system in twins. Eighty-five twin pairs were randomly assigned to 10% hydrogen peroxide whitening strips or placebo strips without peroxide. Both twins (monozygotic or dizygotic) received the same treatment. Maxillary teeth were treated for 30 minutes twice daily for 7 days. Efficacy was measured objectively as L * (light-dark), a * (red-green), and b * (yellow-blue) color chang… Show more

“…However, determining zygosity on the basis of genetic research seems to be the most precise method. For that purpose, the compatibility of several loci (6-10) on several chromosomes, characterized by particular changeability, was confirmed, with the use of DNA acquired from buccal swabs or blood samples [8,27,34,40]. A very interesting observation noted during the studies involving twins was "mirror imaging" effect presented among monozygotes [4,21].…”

“…Corby et al [40] checked the impact of heritability on the susceptibility to teeth whitening. For this purpose, two study groups were given whitening stripes with 10% hydrogen peroxide or placebo to use twice a day for 30 min, for 7 days.…”

“…Heritability estimates, compared with environmental effects of treatment responses to the teeth bleaching in twins were determined. 33 Whitening treatment responses were highly heritable for Δbà and ΔaÃ, but not for ΔLÃ, which was essentially modulated by environmental factors. From this study, it might be postulated that the CIE aà and bÃ, and accordingly chroma, are highly correlated and the CIE Là value is a separate parameter.…”
