The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare long-term survival after proximal gastrectomy (PG) and total gastrectomy (TG) for locally advanced proximal gastric cancer (GC). The PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane CENTRAL databases were searched from their inception to May 2023. Only published two-arm prospective or retrospective studies were included. The selected studies included patients with locally advanced GC who underwent PG or TG and reported quantitative survival outcomes. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS) after gastrectomy. Three studies involving a total of 4,815 patients met the inclusion criteria. The age of the patients ranged from 57.03–64.46 years and 78.80% were male. The estimated 5-year OS probability after TG varied from 30.14 to 72.0%, and from 42.06 to 74.9% after PG. Results of the meta-analyses revealed a significant association between PG and improved OS compared with that of TG, with a pooled hazard ratio of 1.15 (95% CI, 1.05–1.25). No heterogeneity was observed in the included studies (I 2 =0%). Overall, in managing locally advanced GC, PG demonstrated comparable or marginally improved OS compared with TG during postoperative follow-up; however, further meta-analyses are required to provide stronger evidence.

Background: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as crucial regulators in various biological processes, including cancer development and progression. This study aimed to investigate the expression differences of the BRAF-activated non-coding RNA (BANCR) gene in GC tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues. The potential diagnostic significance of BANCR in GC was explored, with the aim of improving diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for this global health burden. Materials and Methods: Tissue samples from 100 gastric cancer (GC) patients were collected, and BANCR expression was analyzed using quantitative real-time PCR. Correlations between BANCR expression and clinicopathological features were assessed, and its biomarker potential was evaluated. Results: In individuals diagnosed with GC, the expression of BANCR was notably elevated in tumor tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues ( P < 0.0001). However, the analysis of gene expression data did not demonstrate any statistically significant correlation between elevated BANCR expression and clinicopathological features. According to the ROC analysis, BANCR demonstrated an AUC of 0.6733 ( P < 0.0001), with a sensitivity of 73% and a specificity of 45%. However, further evaluation is required to determine its potential as a biomarker (CI 95% = 0.5992 to 0.7473). Conclusions: The observed upregulation of BANCR in GC tissues implies its potential involvement as an oncogenic lncRNA in GC patients. Furthermore, BANCR may serve as a promising biomarker for identification and treatment of GC.

BackgroundGastric cancer is one of the most common cancers and a leading cause of death worldwide. Most cases of gastric cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage when no definitive treatment is available leading to an overall declined survival rate. In this study, we aimed to investigate the survival rate of gastric cancer patients admitted to our tertiary care center and determined the relationship between sociodemographic and clinicopathological characteristics with mortality. MethodologyGastric cancer patients treated between January 2019 and December 2020 were included in this retrospective study. The clinicopathological and demographic data of 275 gastric cancer patients were analyzed. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate the overall survival of gastric cancer patients. The Kaplan-Meier log-rank test was used to calculate the difference. ResultsThe mean survival of gastric cancer patients was 20.10 months (95% confidence interval = 19.20-21.03). Deaths were higher among stage III (42.6%) and stage IV (36.1%) patients compared to stage I (1.6%) and stage II (19.7%) patients. Mortality was significantly higher (70.5%) in patients without surgery. ConclusionsThe mean survival in our study setting is lower and is associated with the pathological stage of the disease, surgical intervention, and patients presenting with other gastrointestinal symptoms. A lower survival rate can be attributed to late diagnosis.
