Treatment with buckwheat bran extract prevents the elevation of serum triglyceride levels and fatty liver in KK-Ay mice.

Abstract: Buckwheat powder or protein has been shown to decrease the total serum cholesterol level in non-diabetic mice or rats. However, the lipid-lowering effect of buckwheat bran extract (BBE) in diabetic mice has not been fully elucidated. KK-A(y) mice that received six-week treatment with BBE showed decreased body weight and liver weight compared to those of control (vehicle) mice. However, there was no significant difference in food intake. BBE treatments prevented liver triglyceride accumulation and decreased the… Show more

“…At the same time, the protein in buckwheat is gluten-free, and it will process buckwheat and its products as an alternative nutritious food to substitute the gluten grains without causing allergens and digestive issues [3,4]. Subsequently, buckwheat contains rare bioactive components such as rutin, quercetin, vitexin, anthocyanidins, and myo-inositol, which play an important role in anti-oxidation metabolism of the human body as scavengers of active oxygen and possess healing effects on some chronic diseases like diabetes [5], fatty liver [6], and even cancer [7]. Additionally, it is should be noticed that buckwheat is the only pseudocereal rich in natural rutin, which process buckwheat became a beneficial source of dietary rutin [2].…”

“…Hosaka et al examined the lipid‐lowering effect of buckwheat bran extract (BBE) in diabetic mice. KK‐Ay mice that received 6‐week treatment with BBE showed decreased body weight and liver weight compared to control (vehicle) mice, but there was no significant difference in food intake. BBE treatment prevents liver triglyceride accumulation and decreases serum triglyceride levels.…”

“…Buckwheat is characterized by high protein content with balanced amino acid composition, high content of minerals (e.g., magnesium, zinc and iron) and other biologically active phytochemicals (such as rutin) as well as dietary fiber [ 3 ]. It was observed that buckwheat consumption had a positive effect on the lipid profile—lowering the levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins and increasing the levels of high-density lipoproteins [ 4 ]. Consequently, the risk of occurrence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, cancer and cardiovascular disease was reduced [ 5 ].…”
