Treatment with IgM-enriched intravenous immunoglobulins (IgM-IVIg) enhances clearance of stroke-associated bacterial lung infection

Abstract: Post-stroke infection is a common complication of stroke that is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. We previously found that experimental stroke induces an ablation of multiple sub-populations of B cells and reduced levels of IgM antibody that coincide with the development of spontaneous bacterial pneumonia. Reduced circulating IgM concentrations were also observed in acute stroke patients. The loss of IgM antibody after stroke could be an important determinant of infection susceptibility and h… Show more

“…Mouse cytokines from microglial supernatants were measured using MILLIPLEX® multiplex assays as described previously (McCulloch et al , 2022). Briefly, MILLIPLEX MAP Mouse Cytokine/Chemokine Magnetic Bead Panel (MCYTOMAG-70K, Merck) was used to measure GM-CSF, IFN-γ, IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-12(p40), IL-33 and TNF-α.…”

“…In the mouse model of stroke, this can improve the clearance of bacteria in SAP in the lungs. 105 Besides immunomodulation, preventive antibiotic therapy is an obvious approach to prevent SAP. In experimental stroke, this therapeutic approach reveals no difference in survival compared with standard treatment (initiation of antibiotic therapy after SAP diagnosis) but improves long-term functional outcome.…”
