Since ancient times, plants have been used to treat human diseases in folk medicine, including sexual dysfunctions in both men and women, although it is still a taboo subject in many countries. In different cultures and populations, plants have also been used for another lesser-known purpose: the stimulation of eroticism, which not only promotes health but also increases people self-steem. This use remains hidden for various reasons, among which are: a) the shame of talking about it, b) the urgency of addressing a sexual dysfunction, and mainly c) the lack of adequate and concise studies that deal with this topic professionally and from a human sense. Valuable information, however, is implicit in various studies on treatments for sexual dysfunction. In this study a systematic review was carried out on native plants in databases in which the improve of symptoms of sexual dysfunction in women and men favored health, well-being and increased eroticism. Also, a pilot field study was carried out in traditional markets in Mexico City and Puebla City in Mexico to learn about the plants used by the general population to improve sexual health and the willingness to talk about this issue.

Pathological Significance of Macrophages in Erectile Dysfunction Including Peyronie’s Disease

Erectile function is regulated by complex mechanisms centered on vascular- and nerve-related systems. Hence, dysregulation of these systems leads to erectile dysfunction (ED), which causes mental distress and decreases the quality of life of patients and their partners. At the molecular level, many factors, such as fibrosis, lipid metabolism abnormalities, the immune system, and stem cells, play crucial roles in the etiology and development of ED. Although phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors are currently the standard treatment agents for patients with ED, they are effective only in a subgroup of patients. Therefore, further insight into the pathological mechanism underlying ED is needed to discuss ED treatment strategies. In this review, we focused on the biological and pathological significance of macrophages in ED because the interaction of macrophages with ED-related mechanisms have not been well explored, despite their important roles in vasculogenic and neurogenic diseases. Furthermore, we examined the pathological significance of macrophages in Peyronie’s disease (PD), a cause of ED characterized by penile deformation (visible curvature) during erection and pain. Although microinjury and the subsequent abnormal healing process of the tunica albuginea are known to be important processes in this disease, the detailed etiology and pathophysiology of PD are not fully understood. This is the first review on the pathological role of macrophages in PD.

Corporoplasty is urological correction surgery for penile deviation that causes copulatory dysfunction or aesthetic discomfort. Penile deviation can be congenital or acquired (Peyronie’s disease, penile fracture). Congenital penile deviation is relatively rare and manifests in the curvature of erect penis ventrally and/or laterally, in most cases. According to many studies, patients with curvatures of 30° or more eventually seek surgical treatment. Congenital curvature may be mistaken for Peyronie’s disease for similar manifestations that, however, differ in aetiology and pathophysiology. Excisional, incisional corporoplasty or plication are commonly engaged to treat congenital curvatures, in various techniques and modifications. Augmentation transplantation (grafting) and penile prosthesis implantation with variant deviation treatment options are the usual practice in Peyronie’s disease. Unequivocal judgment of pros and cons in any particular technique is nevertheless implausible to make. This article aims to review current trends, protocols and their relative advantages in corporoplasty.
