Trematodes of the Eurasian coot (Fulica atra L) in the Belgrade area

Abstract: A total of 118 Eurasian coots (Fulica atra L) from the Belgrade area were examined and 68.64% were found to be infected with trematodes. Nine species of trematodes were detected: Echinostoma sarcinum, Metorchis xanthosomus Hyptiasmus oculeus, Cyclocoelum mutabile, Cotylurus hebraicus, Notocotylus attenuatus, Notocotylus pacifera, Tanaisia longivitelata and Bilharziella polonica. Few studies have examined vertebrate models of invasive species to explore parasite release as a proposed mechanism through which host species might become invasive. In this study, we examined evidence for parasite release in invasive American bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana/Lithobates catesbeianus) from five sites in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. We examined helminth species richness, as well as the prevalence, intensity and abundance of lung and kidney fluke infections. These flukes are expected to impose costs on host survival, growth and reproductive output. We compared measures of these parasite taxa with bullfrogs from Ontario and New Brunswick where they are endemic. Helminth species richness in bullfrogs from the Victoria sites was lower than in Ontario bullfrogs, but comparable to reported indices for other endemic populations. The prevalence of lung flukes (Haematoloechus spp.) in bullfrogs from Victoria was twice as high as was observed in the Ontario bullfrogs, and higher than has been reported from other endemic locations. In four of the five study sites in Victoria, numbers of Echinostoma spp. kidney cysts were lower than observed in endemic populations; however, the fifth site had uncharacteristically high numbers of cysts. In this study, there did not appear to be clear evidence to support parasite release using either parasite species numbers, or infection by specific parasite taxa. Instead, the invasive bullfrogs demonstrated high parasite species richness and high levels of infection for parasites known to be harmful to their hosts.

El género Notocotylus es un grupo de trematodos endoparásitos cosmopolitas en ciegos intestinales de aves y algunos mamíferos. Su identificación se basa en características anatómicas, morfométricas y hospedatorias. En este estudio utilizamos morfometría tradicional y análisis de morfometría geométrica en algunas especies del género Notocotylus, que parasitan aves residentes (Rallidae) y migratorias (Anatidae) de las Ciénegas de Lerma, México. Para el análisis, formamos grupos de acuerdo con la especie, hospedero y localidad. Para el estudio de la forma se analizaron 20 puntos de referencia distribuidos en la forma del organismo y estructuras internas. Los resultados de morfometría lineal sugieren que la discriminación de grupos se basa en el ancho total, ancho ovárico, longitud total y ancho testicular de los parásitos. La morfometría geométrica muestra diferentes morfotipos en los parásitos de aves residentes y migratorias, así como un efecto en la localidad. Finalmente, la morfometría geométrica aporta resultados significativos y puede ayudar a mejorar la identificación de especies del género Notocotylus.

During an investigation on intestinal flukes of cattle egret, Ardeola ibis ibis excysted metacercaria and adult worms belonging to family Echinostomatidae Nephrostomum ramosum were recovered. The tegumental surface of N. ramosum was described for the first time using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM observations of excysted metacercaria and adult worms showed some basic differences, excysted metacercaria is conical shaped, ventrally curved, the oral sucker is not developed and the ventral sucker is located in the anterior third of the body, while adult worm has an elongated body with a distinct head collar at the central of which is located on the subterminal oral sucker. The oral and ventral suckers are located closely in the anterior fifth of the body. The total number of collar spines is 40 including five end group ones on each ventral corner. The tegument of the body is wrinkled with transverse grooves and is devoid of spines. The surface of whole body is lacking sensory papillae except the dorsal area of the cephalic region. The results reveal that the characteristic features of N. ramosum, including the number and shape of collar spines, the corrugated surface of the body, absence of tegumental spines and distribution of papillae differed from other echinostomes.
