Trend Analysis of Hydrological Drought for Selected Rivers in Iraq

Abstract: The surface water in study area supports a range of uses such as water supply, irrigation and hydropower generation. Therefore, the assessment and analysis of the hydrological drought are important in the planning and management of the water resources. In this paper, hydrological drought was assessed using stream-flow drought index (SDI) based on observed mean monthly stream-flow data collected from three selected gauging stations at Greater Zab River, Lesser Zab River and Khazir River located in the North-Eas… Show more

“…Greater Zab and Lesser Zab rivers are two main tributaries of the Tigris river in Iraq, as shown in Figure 1. Geographically, the two river basins are located between latitudes of 35° 21' N to 38° 06' N and longitudes of 43° 25' E to 46° 03' E (Hasan and Saeed, 2020). Greater Zab river catchment area covers about 26750 km 2 and the mainstream river length is approximately 370 km, joining the Tigris river south of Mosul city.…”

“…Four marginal distributions are proposed to fit drought severity and drought duration, which are: exponential, gamma, lognormal and Weibull distributions. The proposed probability distributions are widely used in hydrology (Wu et al, 2015;Hu et al, 2020;Hasan, 2020). The maximum-likelihood method is utilized to calculate the parameters of the marginal distribution.…”

“…In arid and semi-arid regions flood frequency analysis is encountering data and information shortage issues. Especially, in these regions, the reliable estimate is not possible due to short records [3]. Arid and semi-arid climatic condition covers more than 75% of Iran where despite the low annual precipitation, large floods occur sometimes.…”

“…In hydrological studies, it has been used to analyze trends in streamflow and runoff (Ramadan et al, 2012;Peng et al, 2019). The method has also been used in drought assessment and trend analysis (Nury and Hasan, 2016;Hasan and Saeed, 2020;Obateru et al, 2023).…”
