Trend of Bacterial Uropathogens and Their Susceptibility Pattern: Study of Single Academic High-Volume Center in Italy (2015–2019)

Abstract: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a very widespread infection that can occur in disparate age range, in both sexes and in pregnancy/menopause state. Treatment of UTIs is difficult due to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. The present study shows five years of data collected on patients admitted at the University Hospital “San Giovann di Dio e Ruggi d’Aragona” in Salerno, Italy. The investigation exhibits the incidence of the infection, of the gender, and of the age group affected, ident… Show more

“…When comparing the frequency of this pathogen with other microorganisms in the urine samples collected from patients, this bacterium was diagnosed most frequently in both catheter and midstream urine. This confirms reports by other authors that E. coli is the most common etiological agent of UAS in many countries ( Robino et al., 2014 ; da Cruz Campos, 2020 ; Serretiello et al., 2021 ). The ease of causing urinary tract infections by this microorganism is due to the many virulence factors that it possesses.…”

“…The authors concluded that Klebsiella spp. and E. faecalis showed the highest levels of resistance in the region, while carbapenems (for Gram-negative bacteria), vancomycin (for Gram-positive bacteria) and WHO Reserve antibiotics are still safe and effective therapeutic alternatives [ 53 ].…”

“…Only the Chocolate agar plate was maintained in the presence of CO 2 . On the other hand, respiratory tract samples, wound swabs, and other samples were plated directly on standard bacteriology media [ 49 , 50 ]. Lastly, for urine culture, one drop was plated on CPSE chromogen plates (bioMérieux-l’Etoile, Marcy-l’Étoile, France).…”
