Trends in Blood Pressure and Hypertension Detection, Treatment, and Control 1980 to 2009

Abstract: Background Hypertension is common and treatable but detection and control remain a major health challenge. This study sought to determine population trends in blood pressure and in the control of hypertension in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area (2010 population: 2.85 million) from 1980–2009. Methods and Results Surveys of risk factors were carried out every five years among randomly selected adults aged 25–74. Data on hypertension knowledge and use of medications were collected by interview. Blood pressure was … Show more

“…In younger patients, ISH is more common than isolated diastolic hypertension or combined systolic/diastolic hypertension [35,50,[53][54][55], but cardiovascular events are so few at this age, that studies have not been powered to provide conclusive information on outcome. What data are available suggest that the condition is innocuous, but such data come from a small group in the Framingham study [26], and from surrogates -failure to have systolic pressure climb into the hypertensive range over a decade of follow-up [50], in contrast to data on prehypertension [52].…”

“…[1][2][3] Increasing recognition that sustained overdrive of neurohormonal systems such as the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) is involved in HF pathophysiology has led to the introduction of drugs inhibiting key components of the RAAS into clinical practice. [4][5][6] The success of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) underscores the importance of RAAS as a target in these (and other) cardiovascular disorders.…”

“…Treatment of hypertension and dyslipidemia has improved dramatically over the past 20 years, both nationally and within Minnesota. 22,23 Although the prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia increased in our study over time, this likely corresponds to increased treatment and compliance with guideline-directed medical therapy over the past 10 years. 24 Smoking rates have also decreased over time.…”
