Trends in domiciliary dental care including the need for oral appliances and dental technicians in Japan

Abstract: The need for domiciliary dental care (DDC) for people requiring long-term nursing care is increasing as the super-aged society of Japan grows still older. “…Given the relationship between dysphagia and oral health (Table 1), it is believed that dentists, dental hygienists, and dental nurses play an essential role in dysphagia diagnosis and management. They work together as a team, while dentists are responsible for dental treatments, dental hygienists provide oral care and play an important role in long term management of dental care at home [35]. In this view, some diagnostic tools are made for dental professionals to facilitate the identification of dysphagia.…”

“…In particular, as shown in models 3 and 4 of Table 2, despite the adjustment for the covariates of oral health behavior, systemic diseases, and demographic factors, the prevalence of periodontitis increased when the number of prostheses increased in the molar and anterior teeth. Most people with periodontal disease who have prostheses have insufficient self-care for their oral health, therefore, professional oral health management is essential for the progression and prevention of periodontal disease [31][32][33][34].…”

Increased periodontal disease indicates that self-oral care is not su cient, and professional oral care is required to prevent the initiation and progression of periodontal disease associated with increased number of prostheses [27][28][29][30].…”
