Trends in life expectancy of HIV-positive adults on antiretroviral therapy across the globe

Abstract: Purpose of review Improved virological and immunological outcomes and reduced toxicity of antiretroviral combination therapy (ART) raise the hope that life expectancy of HIV-positive persons on ART will approach that of the general population. We systematically review the literature and summarize published estimates of life expectancy of HIV-positive populations on ART. We compare their life expectancy with the life expectancy of the general or, in sub-Saharan Africa, HIV-negative populations, by time period a… Show more

“…Individuals on ART have a near normal life expectancy (Wandeler et al, 2016) and in early phase studies aimed at achieving HIV remission or cure, participants are unlikely to have a direct benefit from the intervention while there are also potential risks. These issues have been reviewed elsewhere (Lo et al, 2013; Rennie et al, 2015).…”

“…Studies from many countries have consistently shown that antiretroviral therapies have radically increased life expectancy, that life expectancy has continued to improve over time, and that the long‐term health and quality of life of people living with HIV has drastically improved . Life expectancy for young people with HIV commencing antiretroviral therapy now approaches that of a young person in the general population .…”
