“…Probing depths 4 mm were present in 54%, and severe probing depths (6 mm) in 5% of subjects, which was considerably lower than the prevalences we observed. In general, in Europe, the prevalences of at least moderate attachment loss and probing depth in adults varied between 20% and 58% with a moderate extent at the site level (Kalsbeek et al 2000, Morris et al 2001, Sheiham & Netuveli 2002, Schurch & Lang 2004, Hugoson & Norderyd 2008, Hugoson et al 2008). Severe periodontitis was prevalent in 3–8% of adults, with few teeth being affected.…”

“…This in itself is reason to seriously consider toothpaste as a main carrier of fl uoride, since it seems to be as effi cient a vehicle for fl uoride as water and salt [Bratthall et al, 1996;Frencken et al, 2002]. Moreover, promotion of tooth brushing with fl uoride toothpaste not only has a caries-reducing effect but also exerts a widespread positive effect on the periodontal condition of the population [Hugoson et al, 1998;Kalsbeek et al, 2000]. Therefore, promotion of twice-a-day tooth brushing with fl uoride toothpaste can be the preventive method of choice in many non-EME countries [Frencken et al, 2002].…”

“…1,2 On the whole though, people have more teeth than they had in the past and more of them are disease-free. [3][4][5] The national surveys of Adult Dental Health have given a 10-yearly summary of the clinical condition of adults in the United Kingdom on three previous occasions. The fourth report in the series was published in March of 2000.…”
