Trends in spatio temporal distribution of Peruvian anchovy and other small pelagic fish biomass from 1966 2009

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Changes in abundance and distribution of anchovy and other species of pelagic fish of the Northern Humboldt Current System (NHCS) are driven by environmental forcing variations in different time and spatial scales between the coastal 'cold' ecosystem and the 'warm' oceanic one. Data to study these fluctuations have come mostly from the fishery to show how anchovy (Engraulis ringens) increases when sardine (Sardinops sagax) declines and vice versa. However, using acoustic data on latitudinal biomass w… Show more

“…The ratio between transmitted and reflected energy is the nautical area scattering coefficient (NASC) expressed in m 2 /nm 2 and was obtained down to 500 m depth. Elementary distance sampling units (EDSUs) were calculated for one nautical miles from 1985 to 1993 and for two nautical mile between 1994 and 2017 according to FAO recommendations (Gutiérrez et al., ).…”

“…Bertrand et al. () and Gutiérrez, Castillo, Segura, Peraltilla, and Flores () detected that physical and chemical variability of the oceanographic system influences the abundance of anchoveta. The variability of distinct water masses, particularly the cold coastal waters (CCW), influences the anchoveta density despite the total stock of the population (Swartzman et al., ).…”

As far as possible, three individuals of both species were randomly sampled by fishing set and by size classes of one centimetre covering the captured size range.…”
