Traumatic dental and facial injuries are frequent in sports and often cause esthetic, functional, psychological, and economic problems. The term "weekend warrior" is used to describe people who participate in physically demanding activities only on the weekend, or part-time. In this prospective cohort study, we examined the prevalence of dental trauma and knowledge of traumatic dental injuries among weekend warriors in Ankara, Turkey. A detailed questionnaire on mouthguard awareness and knowledge and experience of dental trauma was distributed to 1,007 weekend warrior athletes participating in a soccer tournament. The results showed that 9.8% of participants had experienced orofacial trauma, 21.7% were aware of mouthguards, 2.9% reported using mouthguards, 15.4% were aware of the field of sports dentistry, and 19.6% were aware of emergency treatment for dental trauma. Participation in sports, especially contact sports, greatly increases the risk of dental injury. The present results show that knowledge of traumatic orofacial and dental injuries is limited among weekend warriors. Public health authorities should develop relevant educational programs, including broad dissemination of information on the risks of traumatic dental injuries and methods for protection against such injuries. Mandi bular fracture is the second most common facial fracture and there has been a significant increase in number of cases in the last years. Misidentification and inadequate treatment can take to permanent aesthetic or functional deformity. Aim: Evaluate cases of mandibular fracture reduction in the Hospital of Clinics of the Federal University of Uberlândia, from January of 1974 to December of 2002. Study design: historical cohort. Patient and Method: Two hundred and ninety-three cases of reduction of mandibular fractures were retrospectively analyzed according to factors related to: patient, trauma, signs and symptoms, and surgical treatment. Results: There has been a clear tendency of increase of the number of mandibular fractures along the years. There was higher prevalence in male (4:1), with occurrence peak between 20 to 29 years old. The principal causes of fracture in this study were traffic accidents and violence, representing 72.4%. One hundred and thirty-five patients presented only one fracture. The most injured sites were, in decreasing order, symphysis, condyle, angle, body, ramus, and coronoid. We performed closed reduction (28), open reduction (213) and association of the two (11 patients); 56.8% of the patients were treated within the first 3 days; and, 50.4% were discharged from the hospital until the first postoperative day. About 10% of the patients presented complications, being osteomyelitis the most frequent one. Conclusion: The incidence of mandibular fractures was remarkably larger in the male sex, during the third decade of life. The most common cause was traffic accident, and symphysis and condyle were the most injured sites. Isolated fractures occurred in over half of the cases. Most of the patients were treated in the first three days and were discharged until the first postoperative visit. Closed reduction was the treatment most commonly employed. The most frequent complication was osteomyelitis.

OBJETIVO: Analisar a frequência epidemiológica de fraturas mandibulares correlacionando gênero, faixa etária, fatores etiológicos, localização anatômica, e tipos de traços de fratura. MÉTODOS: Estudo retrospectivo nos prontuários de 883 pacientes portadores de fraturas faciais, atendidos no Pronto Socorro do Hospital Geral de Vila Penteado, pelo Serviço de Cirurgia e Traumatologia Buco Maxilo Facial (São Paulo - Brasil), num período de três anos (janeiro de 2004 a dezembro de 2006). RESULTADOS: Dos 883 pacientes avaliados, 270 apresentaram fraturas mandibulares (30,5 %). O gênero masculino foi o mais acometido (76,7%) na faixa etária de 20 a 29 anos (33,0%), o fator etiológico de maior freqüência foi acidente com veículos automotores (35,2%), o corpo da mandíbula foi a localização anatômica mais atingida (47,4%) e os traços únicos prevaleceram (76,7%). CONCLUSÃO: As fraturas, em sua maioria, foram simples (traço único), localizadas em corpo mandibular, e destacadas no sexo masculino, na faixa etária de 20 a 29 anos, além do que o fator etiológico mais comum foi acidente com veículos automotores.
