Trends in Use of Ambulatory Surgery Centers for Cataract Surgery in the United States, 2001-2014

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Cataract surgery is commonly performed at ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) and hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs). These venues differ in many ways, including surgical efficiency, patient throughput, patient safety, and costs per surgery. “…In 2014, 6.89 billion such services related to non-complex cataract surgeries were performed. From 2001 to 2014, the volume of cataract surgery has undergone a large shift from hospital-operated outpatient departments (HOPD) to ASCs [ 49 ]. The primary reason for such a shift involves greater patient convenience, physician productivity, lower out-of-pocket costs for patients and reduced costs for insurers.…”

“…Recently, an increasing number of cataract surgeries were performed at ambulatory surgery centers in China, which improved cataract throughput, improved convenience for patients and surgeons. In addition, performing cataract surgeries at ambulatory surgery centers enhanced surgeon productivity, decreased out-of-pocket patient costs, and decreased per-case costs for insurers [12]. From 2015, the ambulatory surgery center was established in our hospital to perform routine cataract surgeries which have substantially improved cataract throughput.…”
