Trends in use of medical abortion in the United States: reanalysis of surveillance data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2001–2008

Abstract: Background-With changing patterns and increasing use of medical abortion in the United States, it is important to have accurate statistics on the use of this method regularly available. This study assesses the accuracy of medical abortion data reported annually to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and describes trends over time in the use of medical abortion relative to other methods.

“…A higher percentage of the abortions provided in physician's offices and smaller caseload facilities are early medical abortions (14,69), and these practices might be difficult to locate in the wider medical community without active surveillance efforts (69). Nonetheless, a recent comparison of CDC data with mifepristone sales data § § § § § suggests that CDC's Abortion Surveillance System accurately describes the use of early medical abortion relative to other abortion methods in the United States (70). In 2013, however, professional clinical practice guidelines were updated midyear to extend the gestational age eligibility for early medical abortion to 70 days (≤9 completed weeks) (66,71).…”

“…Mifepristone has become an integral part of abortion provision in the United States and contributed to the trend toward very early abortions. 15,16 Of note are eight deaths due to Clostridium species infection after early medical abortions using mifepristone with misoprostol. Clinical details on these deaths have been reported previously after in-depth investigations by the FDA and CDC.…”
