Trends of Cardiovascular Disease Mortality in Relation to Population Aging in Greece (1956 - 2015)

Abstract: Background:Demographic dynamics and decreasing trends in mortality from chronic diseases are major contributors to the phenomenon of population aging. The purpose of the present study was to examine the association between cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and demographic indicators, in Greece the past 60 years. Methods:Life Expectancy at birth (LE), population age structure, fertility rates (TFR) and all-cause, CVD mortality rates were retrieved (data provided by the Hellenic Statistical Authority, 1956-2… Show more

“…An inverse, though not statistically significant, correlation ( b = −0.293, n = 41, t STAT = −1.987 < 2.0227) between Covid‐19 death rates and diabetes prevalence across European countries has been observed (Figure 4 ). Those really interesting findings are counter‐intuitional as longevity is correlated to increased cardiovascular disease rates and CVD deaths are the first cause of death among elder persons (Kollia et al, 2018 ; Tragaki & Panagiotakos, 2018 ). Such findings are presented for the first time in relevant literature.…”

“…Given the development of technology and medicine, some diseases have diminished, whereas for many others there is treatment. The problem arises in cases of cardiovascular diseases, which represent the main cause of premature death in Europe [ 11 ].…”

“…Aging cannot be avoided but at most delayed. The goal is to minimize aging-related negative and cumulative effects and limit CVD disabilities, allowing people to live a healthy aging [ 13 ]. This is the case of long-living individuals, which delay or avoid diseases of aging living more than 20 years longer than what was expected for the general population.…”
