Trends of Colorectal Cancer Epidemiology and Morphology in Tehran Metropolis, Iran from 2006 to 2015

Abstract: Objectives: This study aimed at reporting a 10-years trend in epidemiology and morphology of colorectal cancer (CRC) in Tehran Metropolis, using the data of the National Cancer Registry. Methods: The main sources for data collection included pathology, clinical/paraclinical, as well as death registries. The quality assessment of data was performed based on standard protocols and international reference. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASR) per 100 000 were reported at province levels. Results: Totally, 16280… Show more

“…Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and the second cause of cancer-related death worldwide ( 1 ), with an increasing trend of incidence, especially in countries with low to medium human development indices ( 2 ). Recent national cancer registry reports in Iran indicate CRC as the third most common cancer ( 3 ), previously the fourth, with an increasing trend in its incidence, attributed to the growing use of screening programs and Western lifestyles ( 4 , 5 ). Recent advances in cancer screening programs and novel management strategies have resulted in an overall reduced mortality of CRC ( 6 ).…”

“…The rectal-sigmoid (i.e., rectosigmoid) CRC incidence exceeds 50% of CRC cases in some epidemiological studies [ 5 , 6 ]. The rectosigmoid location for cancers has recently gained more focus for investigation due to its therapeutic and prognostic challenges [ 7 , 8 ].…”
