Tri‐s‐triazine‐Based Crystalline Carbon Nitride Nanosheets for an Improved Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract: Tri-s-triazine-based crystalline carbon nitride nanosheets (CCNNSs) have been successfully extracted via a conventional and cost-effective sonication-centrifugation process. These CCNNSs possess a highly defined and unambiguous structure with minimal thickness, large aspect ratios, homogeneous tri-s-triazine-based units, and high crystallinity. These tri-s-triazine-based CCNNSs show significantly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity under visible light than g-C N , poly (triazine imide)/Li Cl ,… Show more

“…8b presents that CTF-1-100W shows much weaker charge recombination than the reference material g-C 3 N 4 , indicating a much better charge separation on CTF-1-100W than bulk g-C 3 N 4 under irradiation. 9,52,63 This is consistent with the highest photocatalytic activity in both water oxidation and proton reduction. Thus, a higher degree of polymer crystallisation shows less charge recombination, consistent with the higher photocatalytic activity.…”

“…0.34 nm calculated from the TEM contrast intensity profile and the Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT), which is consistent with the [001] peak shown in the PXRD patterns. 52 The ability of the CTF-1 samples to evolve oxygen from water, as the focus of the study, was investigated using silver ions (from AgNO 3 ) as a sacrificial electron acceptor, which is widely used in this half reaction to fairly assess catalysts' activity. “…[37][38][39] Among them, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), as the most stable allotrope of carbon nitrides under ambient conditions, has a unique structure comprised of a 2D sheet of tri-s-triazine connected via tertiary amines. [40][41][42][43][44] However, with a relatively large band gap (≈2.7 eV) and the existence of contact resistance between the nanosheets, g-C 3 N 4 exhibits a poor electrical conductivity and low photocatalytic activity owing to the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In particular, g-C 3 N 4 , with a moderate band gap and indirect-semiconductor nature, has become a promising metal-free catalyst for water splitting and the degradation of pollutants due to the advantages of low cost and high specific surface area (2500 m 2 g −1 for the monolayer) and has been applied in organic solar cells.…”
