Trial of Electrolyzed Strong Acid Aqueous Solution Lavage in the Treatment of Peritonitis and Intraperitoneal Abscess

Abstract: Electrolyzed strong acid aqueous solution is acidic water that contains active oxygen and active chlorine and possesses a redox potential. We performed peritoneal and abscess lavages with an electrolyzed strong acid aqueous solution to treat 7 patients with peritonitis and intraperitoneal abscesses, who were seen in our department between December 1994 and April 1995. The underlying disease was duodenal ulcer perforation in 4 of these 7 patients and gastric ulcer perforation, acute enteritis, and intraperitone… Show more

“…In cases of peritonitis, partially with peritoneal abscess ( n = 7), no bacterial growth was detectable 3-7 days after irrigating twice daily for 9-12 days [149]. Postoperative complications including SSI were significantly reduced in patients with peritonitis without symptoms of intolerance [150].…”

“…Its usefulness was further extended in Japan after several studies used ES to manage mediastinitis after cardiac operations and peritoneal abscess after abdominal operations [15,16]. The ES has been found to promote re-epithelialization, increasing the proliferation of lymphocytes and macrophages associated with collagen deposition for surgical incision healing [14].…”

“…Interestingly, there are some reports showing beneficial effects of super-oxidized solutions in disorders related to mast cell activation, suggesting that these solutions might have a direct modulator activity on this type of cells [20][21][22].…”

“…Similarly in humans, skin infections and ulcers [26], inflammatory skin disorders (e.g. pemphigus, psoriasis) [27], burns [28] and peritonitis [20,29] have all improved their outcomes with the use of SOS treatment. But whether these better outcomes are related to the antiseptic efficacy of the SOS, or to a synergystic anti-inflammatory effect, is unknown [29,30].…”
