Triatominae species of Suriname (Heteroptera: Reduviidae) and their role as vectors of Chagas disease

Abstract: Nine species of Triatominae, representing three tribes and five genera, are currently known in Suriname. An annotated list of the species based on the collections of the Bureau of Public Health (Suriname), the National Zoological Collection Suriname and the National History Museum Leiden (the Netherlands) is provided. Additionally, the results of several years of opportunistic collection in two domestic environments are presented. The most common species are Rhodnius pictipes Stål, 1972, Rhodnius robustus Larr… Show more

“…The important abundance of P . geniculatus is consistent with entomological analysis of previous field and museum collections of triatomines in French Guiana [ 36 , 61 , 62 ], in close Surinam [ 63 , 64 ] and in other Amazonian places in Brazil [ 65 67 ]. Similarly, R .…”

“…lignarius and E . mucronatus have been described as parts of the community of triatomines in French Guiana [ 36 , 62 ], Surinam [ 64 ] and in Brazil [ 67 71 ]. The overall number of triatomine species in the Amazonia is probably 15–20 [ 72 ] with a local species richness typically larger than 10 in various Ecoregions [ 37 ].…”

“…Since 1998, several regional and smaller scale compilations on the geographic distribution of triatomines have been published. Some of them analyze and describe the geographic distributions of species from a single country such as Brazil 4 , 5 , Colombia 6 and Mexico 7 , 8 ; others describe lists of species, such as those published for French Guiana 9 , Suriname 10 , Peru 11 and Venezuela 12 , or provide lists of valid species (checklists) for all triatomine species 13 , including systematic updates. Despite these valuable publications, a database with integrated information on the georeferenced occurrence of all -or at least the majority- American triatomine species, is still unavailable.…”
