Triazine Based Bipolar Host Materials for Blue Phosphorescent OLEDs

Abstract: Two novel bipolar host materials BPTRZ and MBPTRZ were synthesized, in which the hole transporting carbazole is separated from the electron transporting triazine moiety by a fully aromatic, but nonconjugated meta-linked biphenyl unit. The additional twist at the biphenyl in MBPTRZ, which is achieved by methyl-substitution in 2- and 2′-position of the biphenyl leads to a higher triplet energy of 2.81 eV compared to 2.70 eV for BPTRZ. Both materials possess high thermal stabilities and good glass forming propert… Show more

“…151,[212][213][214][215][216] Modification of the host CBP by replacing one phenyl ring in the biphenyl unit with a pyridine or a pyrimidine ring, CPPY and CPHP (Fig. As discussed in Section 3.7.1.3, nitrogencontaining six-membered heterocyclic groups such as pyridine, pyrimidine and triazine are electron-deficient structures and can be combined with a triphenylamine moiety to synthesize bipolar host materials and show good performance in PHOLEDs.…”

“…With the molecular size enlarged, T g is also raised in the order of CzPPQ (145 1C). [213][214][215]223 However, it seems that the carbazole/ triazine bipolar hosts with direct linkages between the triazine and the nitrogen atom in carbazole cannot bring about high efficiencies to the related blue PHOLEDs, which can be ascribed to the fact that the strong electron-deficient character will significantly decrease the electron density on carbazole to weaken the HI/HT ability, 221 and thereby fail to show bipolar character. Using these quinoline/carbazole hybrids as hosts, the orange-emitting device based on Ir(pq) 3 and the deep-red emitting device based on Ir(piq) 3 were fabricated.…”
