Tribochemical behaviour of the selected mesogenic additive in n-hexadecane

Abstract: Tribochemical behaviour of the selected mesogenic compound (4-butylcyclohexanoic acid p-hexaoxyphenyl ester) was investigated by means of ball-on-disk machine at ambient and elevated temperatures. To selection of the thermal conditions of tribological tests DSC technique was used and to analyse tribochemical products layered on the wear tracks-SEM/EDS, FTIRM and XPS ones. Obtained results show that the mesogen dissolved in n-hexadecane is an effective antiwear additive which decreases temperature of the lubric… Show more

“…Such tribological behavior is attributed to the molecular ordering in the liquid film. [11][12][13][14][15][16] Therefore, it is important to determine the arrangement and orientation of molecules in the contact region to investigate their effects on the lubricating properties of the fluid. However, researchers have little information on the orientation of liquid molecules as they flow between two solid surfaces.…”

“…This may be due to the presence of polar aldehydic group as additional functionality except ester in the copolymers. [38,39] Hence the copolymer (P-4), which contains larger proportion of citral unit into the polymer matrix showed better performance as AW additives. The long hydrocarbon chain of the citral moiety provides an excellent molecular barrier while the polar ester group as well as aldehyde group of citral co-ordinate with irons to form a protective film on the metal surface.…”

“…As it has been shown aqueous solutions of surfactants can act as lubricants characterized by low motion resistance and wear, as well as by antiseizure properties. ,, This phenomenon of “lubrication by water” was interpreted based on surface activity of the surfactants which, under static conditions, form micelles in the surface phase and/or lyotropic liquid crystals at higher concentrations. ,,− The fundamental research carried out on model lubricants (aqueous, micellar surfactant solutions) has formed a basis for designing formulations of hydraulic and cutting fluids. …”
