Tribocorrosion and the surface repassivation behavior of Monel 400 alloy in artificial seawater

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to study the tribocorrosion and the surface repassivation behaviors of Monel 400 alloy in artificial seawater. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the tribocorrosion behavior of Monel 400 alloy was studied under different applied loads in artificial seawater by using a pin-on-disk tribometer equipped with an electrochemical workstation. The applied loads were selected ranging from 50 to 200 N. The surface repassivation behavior of Monel 400 alloy was studied by X-ray photoelect… Show more

“…Accordingly, in figures 8(a)-(c), the polished and laserablated Monel ® alloy 400 has a lot of NiO and very little metallic Ni on its surface. This demonstrates that the passive film's surface outer layer is primarily made of NiO, whereas the inside layer is primarily made of Ni [55].…”

“…Moreover, the contacting surfaces are immersed in the body fluid, so corrosion could occur. As a result, metallic materials should have higher resistance to tribocorrosion for this type of application (Çomaklı, 2021; Lu et al , 2022; Ma et al , 2018). However, there is no adequate study on the nature of the relationship between corrosion and tribocorrosion of CoCrMoW manufactured with SLM with scan speed.…”

“…Nickel alloys are widely used in the automotive and chemical or marine industries. A representative of such alloys is Monel ® Alloy 400, but its low hardness and wear resistance restrict the fields in which it can be applied [1,2]. Although it has good corrosion resistance, mechanical properties are undoubtedly important.…”
