Corrosion is the degradation of a material due to an electrochemical attack and in the hydrocarbon industry there are two main types of corrosion: sour corrosion generated by H 2 S (2) and sweet corrosion generated by CO 2 (3). Once a production well does not have enough pressure to pump the crude oil, it is injected with CO 2 and water, due to the effect of the content of CO 2 dissolved in the water, it becomes acid forming carbonic acid and this, in turn, with the oxidation reaction of the iron, becomes iron carbonate, causing fresh corrosion (4).…”
