Tribological Behaviour of Aluminium/Alumina/Graphite Hybrid Metal Matrix Composite Using Taguchi’s Techniques

Abstract: Tribological behaviour of aluminium alloy (Al-Si10Mg) reinforced with alumina (9%) and graphite (3%) fabricated by stir casting process was investigated. The wear and frictional properties of the hybrid metal matrix composites was studied by performing dry sliding wear test using a pin-on-disc wear tester. Experiments were conducted based on the plan of experiments generated through Taguchi's technique. A L 27 Orthogonal array was selected for analysis of the data. Investigation to find the influence of applie… Show more

“…Vijaya Ramnath et al [18,19,20] studied the compression and chemical Properties of Aluminium Nano Composite and also reviewed aluminium metal matrix composites. Radhika et al [21] stated that the incorporation of Graphite as primary reinforcement, which forms the protective layer between the pin and the counter face, increases wear resistance. Manoj Singla et al [22] found that a sample which contains 25% SiC gives the best value in Hardness and Toughness, i.e., Hardness 45.5 BHN and Impact Strength 36 N-m.…”

“…Normally, the external lubricant plays a vital role in wear behavior. The addition of naturallubricant like graphite enhances the selflubricating capacity of the composites, though the wear behavior of Al/SiCp is good, which is essential in some of the applications where lubrication needs to be applied periodically, especially for wear parts which are difficult to access.Metal matrix composite is fabricated by the Stir casting technique, because it is economical and good adhesion takes place between the matrix and reinforcement."Radhika et al [11] found taguchi technique as a valuable technique to deal with responses influenced by multi variables. It is formulated for process optimization and detection of optimal combination of the parameters for a given response.…”

“…The wear rate and coefficient of friction decrease with increasing volume fraction of reinforcements [6].N. Radhika, R. Subramanian, S. Venkat Prasat Investigation to find the influence of applied load, sliding speed and sliding distance on wear rate, as well as the coefficient of friction during wearing process was carried out using ANOVA and regression equations for each response were developed [7]. Objective of the model was chosen as "smaller the better" characteristics to analyse the dry sliding wear resistance [7].…”
