Tribological Behaviour of Electroless Ni–P Coatings in Brine Solution and Optimization of Coating Parameters Using Taguchi Based Grey Relation Analysis

Abstract: The present paper deals with the synthesis of electroless nickel-phosphorous (Ni-P) coatings on mild steel substrate and optimization of the coating process parameters for minimum friction and wear in brine solution using Taguchi based grey relation analysis. The study is carried out using different combinations of four coating process parameters, namely, concentration of nickel source (A), concentration reducing agent (B), bath temperature (C) and annealing temperature (D) with three levels each (1, 2 and 3).… Show more

“…Finally, the optimal setting of the parameters is obtained. Taguchi's method along with grey relational analysis has been employed successfully to obtain optimized deposition condition of electroless nickel coating, minimize friction, wear and maximize corrosion resistance of electroless nickel binary, ternary as well as composite coatings (Sahoo & Pal, 2007;Das & Sahoo, 2011a, 2011bRoy & Sahoo, 2012;Gadhari & Sahoo, 2015;Panja & Sahoo, 2015).…”

“…Electroless nickel coatings find extensive usage in chemical, autmobile, marine and aerospace applications where they are subjected to corrosive or lubricated environments. Tribological performance optimization of electroless Ni-P coating under alkaline environment has been done by Panja & Sahoo (2015). The bath temperature and the annealing temperature was seen to affect the friction and wear behavior of the deposits significantly in NaOH solution (10%).…”

“…Dilute alkaline solutions are barely corrosive above their boiling point. Magnesium alloys must be protected from corrosion and given additional surface treatment to boost the corrosion resistance needed for a variety of applications [4][5][6].…”
