Tribological performance of positive deterministic textured surfaces in parallel sliding lubricated contacts: Effect of texture size and height

Abstract: Recent studies in tribology show that deterministic surface texture enhances the tribological performance of parallel sliding lubricated contacts in terms of reduction in friction and an increase in load carrying capacity. This paper presents an experimental study to assess the effect of texture size and height on hydrodynamic performance of parallel sliding thrust bearing. Positive deterministic textures of different size and height with circular, elliptical, square and triangular cross-sections are fabricate… Show more

“…Texture grooves on the bearing surface reduced the friction values compared with the untextured bearing. 24 The main reason for friction reduction in a texture-based bearing was the micro-hydrodynamic effect. The loadcarrying capacity over the textured and untextured bearings is depicted in Figure 5(b).…”

“…14,15 Texturing is an ultra-precise process to create micro-morphology with specific shape and size characteristics on the surface of materials. [16][17][18] At present, it has been applied to cutting tools, 19 bearing sleeves, 20 mechanical metamaterial design and tensile materials, 21,22 solar cells, 23,24 computer hard disks, 25,26 handwritten input devices, 27 etc., and has obtained good results, and the studied surface texturing patterns are mainly pit-shaped and dent-shaped. 28 Rahman et al 29 and Venkateswara Babu et al 30 found in their experimental study that surfaces with texture had more stable friction coefficients than non-textured surfaces, and the friction coefficients and wear were significantly lower than those of non-textured specimens.…”

“…Sharma N et al 25 found that the bearing capacity of textured bearing increased with coupling stress only under low eccentricity ratio, and reasonable design of textured surface can improve bearing performances. [26][27][28] The bearing capacity of smooth bearing enhanced with the increase of the coupling stress. Gajrani et al 29 have the controlled textured applied on the cutting tool to effectively reduce cutting force, cutting temperature, friction coefficient, and tool wear.…”
