Triboluminescence of Lanthanide Coordination Polymers with Face‐to‐Face Arranged Substituents

Abstract: GeneralEuropium acetate n-hydrate (99.9%), terbium acetate tetrahydrate (99.9%), gadolinium acetate tetrahydrate (99.9%), 1.55 M n-butyllithium (n-BuLi) in n-hexane, and hydrogen peroxide were purchased from Kanto Chemical Co., Inc. 2,5-Dibromofuran, 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene, 2,5-dibromothiophene, and chlorodiphenylphosphine (PPh 2 Cl) were obtained from Tokyo Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. All other chemicals and solvents were reagent grade and were used without further purification.

“…8 Among known TL coordination compounds, complexes of rare earth elements, Eu III and Tb III , are the most widely known. [9][10][11] A limited number of triboluminescent transition metal (TM) complexes have also been reported, including Ru II , 12 Pt II , 13 Mn II , [14][15][16] and Cu I . [17][18][19][20][21][22] Considering that Cu is one of the most abundant and inexpensive metals, TL materials based on Cu present a practical alternative to currently utilized Eu-and Tb-based materials.…”

“…Nevertheless, the TL spectra are identical to their corresponding PL spectra, indicating that the symmetry of the complexes did not change upon fracture of the crystal structure. If so, the splitting of the hypertensive peaks would have been altered [19].…”

“…Triboluminescence of lanthanide coordination polymers was reported by Kitagawa, Hasegawa, and coworkers. 137 The used lanthanide coordination polymers are composed of Tb III and Eu III emission centers, hexafluoroacetylacetonate antenna, and 2,5bis(diphenylphosphoryl)-furan bridging ligands. Emission for triboluminescence (yellow) of Tb III /Eu III -mixed coordination polymer was apparently different from that for photoluminescence emission upon UV light irradiation (reddishorange).…”
