Trichoderma harzianum as a biocontrol agent against Alternaria alternata on tobacco

Abstract: The leaf extracts of Lantana camara in different organic solvents (methanol, acetone, ethanol and aqueous) were assessed in-vitro for fungitoxic activity against phytopathogenic Alternaria alternata isolated from potato (Solanum tuberosum) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). The assessment of fungitoxicity was carried out by food poison technique 1 using four different extracts at 200 mg/ml and their activity was recorded as radial growth and percentage inhibition. Among the four extracts, ethanol and aceton… Show more

“…These results were in agreement with laboratory experiments carried out against several foliar pathogens; Hussein et al. () recorded that T. harzianum exhibited high inhibition rate of mycelial growth of Stemphylim vesicarium (the pathogen of onion leaf blight) reaching to 78.1%, Rossi and Pattori () reported that T. harzianum showed significant reduction to production of S. vesicarium conidia, and recently, Gveroska and Ziberoski () reported that T. harzianum exhibited strong reducing effect on the development of A. alternata (the pathogen of brown spot disease on tobacco) with various mechanisms of antagonistic influence.…”

“…T. harzianum develops without obstacles, and it has opportunities to stop the development of A. alternate. It grows over the colony of the pathogen at the same time (Biljana and Jugosslave, 2011;Gveroska and Ziberosk, 2011). Rajendiran et al (2010) demonstrated the inhibitory effect of Trichoderma viride against Fusarium sp., Penicillium sp.…”

“…In this respect, several reseachers have reported that Trichoderma has a good antagonistic effect on mycelial growth and conidial germination of Alternaria porri (Imtiaj & Lee 2008). Trichoderma harzianum exhibited a strong suppressive effect on the development of many foliar plant pathogens such as Alternaria alternata and Stemphylium vesicarium causing high inhibition of mycelial growth and conidial germination (Gveroska & Ziberoski 2012, Hussein et al 2007, Rossi & Pattori 2009.…”
