Trichoderma harzianum SQR-T037 rapidly degrades allelochemicals in rhizospheres of continuously cropped cucumbers

Abstract: To alleviate the stress of continuous cropping for cucumber continuous cropping (CCC) system, a beneficial fungus Trichoderma harzianum SQR-T037 (SQR-T037) was isolated and applied to soil to degrade allelochemicals exuded from cucumber plants in a Rhizobox experiment. The following phenolic acids (PAs), classified as allelochemicals, were isolated and identified from cucumber rhizospheres: 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, ferulic acid, benzoic acid, 3-phenylpropionic acid, and cinnamic acid. Mixed PAs ad… Show more

“…As expected, recovery of many allelochemicals such as phenolic acids, saponins, isothiocyanates, and flavonoid glycosides spiked into soils is greater in sterile than nonsterile soils (Blum et al, 1994;Okumura et al, 1999;Weidenhamer and Romeo, 2004;Furubayashi et al, 2005;Barto and Cipollini, 2009b;Chen et al, 2011). More surprising is the range of half-lives found for specific compounds in non-sterile soils.…”

“…Biocontrol with isolated antagonistic microorganisms as a similar method to BSD is a focal point of research in the control of soil-borne diseases (Ling et al 2011a;Chen et al 2010). It is based on the applications of aerobic antagonistic microbes in the soil, such as Trichoderma spp., Bacillus spp.…”
