Abstract:Herpesvirus genomes are maintained as extrachromosomal plasmids within the nuclei of infected cells. Some herpesviruses persist within dividing cells, putting the viral genome at risk of being lost to the cytoplasm during mitosis because karyokinesis (nuclear division) requires nuclear envelope breakdown.
