Triple mass spectrometry (MS/MS/MS) with a floated collision cell in a four‐sector tandem mass spectrometer

Abstract: A method is described for carrying out triple mass spectrometry (MS/MS/MS) experiments with an electrically floated collision cell in the third field-free region on a tandem double-focusing mass spectrometer. The method described may use magnet calibration obtained at any accelerating voltage and is generally applicable at any value of the collision cell voltage. The utility of the method to acquire MS/MS/MS spectra of enhanced quality is demomtrated on a JEOL JMS-HXllO/HXllO four-sector mass spectrometer.

“…Mu ltiple-stage mass spectrometry (MS", II > 2) is a very useful technique for studies of internal energy deposition and fragmentation pathways [37,38] and has been used in structural mass spectrometry as well [39,40]. MS 4 and MS s have been demonstrated in a four-sector tandem instrument with high energy ClO [38].…”

“…MS 4 and MS s have been demonstrated in a four-sector tandem instrument with high energy ClO [38]. In our previous MS:l experiment [40], successive CIO was completed by using two collis ion cells located in the first and third FFR, respectively. By floating the second collision cell, sensitivity for low mass ions was enhanced.…”

“…where U; = Utly, and m~= mf/Y. Because electrostatic and magnetic sectors separate ions according to their kinetic energy to charge ratio (U;) and mass-tocharge ratio (m:), respectively, the initial setting of MS-II for B/E linked scan should follow the equation [10,12], where V 2 is the initial voltage of M5-II. In these experiments, V 2 is always set at 10 kV.…”

“…Typically, the tandem double-focusing mass spectrometers have been used for determining the product ions of a single mass-selected precursor ion (product ion scan). A few unique experiments have been performed on tandem double-focusing mass spectrometers, but these experiments involve scanning only one of the double-focusing mass spectrometers. …”
