Triplet lifetime in gaseous argon

Abstract: MiniCLEAN is a single-phase liquid argon dark matter experiment. During the initial cooling phase, impurities within the cold gas (<140 K) were monitored by measuring the scintillation light triplet lifetime, and ultimately a triplet lifetime of 3.480 ± 0.001 (stat.) ± 0.064 (sys.) µs was obtained, indicating ultra-pure argon. This is the longest argon triplet time constant ever reported. The effect of quenching of separate components of the scintillation light is also investigated.PACS. PACS-key discribing te… Show more

“…This purity was estimated through the decay time constant τ t e2 of the triplet excimer states Ar * 2 ( 3 Σ u ). The values obtained between 2.6 and 2.8 μs set the level of impurities in the range 0.1-1 ppm [39], which is consistent with the gas contamination certified by the producer. The light yield via the triplet deexcitation is then scaled by τ t e2 /τ re f , where τ t e2 is the measured triplet decay time and τ re f = 3.2 μs is the triplet radiative lifetime with negligible impurities concentration [40].…”

“…where τ s is the slow component, τ d is the energy transfer time between the Xe and triplet state of the Ar, A 1 , A 2 and A 3 are the intensities, and τ long is an additional time constant to account for the exponential tail at late times. This artifact is consistent with light coming from the cold gas in the ullage [36].…”

“…In our experiment the actual purity of the argon gas was estimated through the decay time constant of the triplet excimer states Ar * 2 ( 3 Σ u ). The values obtained between 2.5 and 3 µs set the level of impurities in the range 0.1-1 ppm [34], which is consistent with the gas contamination certified by the producer. The measured triplet decay time rejects the possible explanation of the UV3-photon production in terms of parasitic re-emissions from N 2 , H 2 O and O 2 contamination, which can only produce a sub-dominant component in the UV band and over a wide time scale.…”
